Meraner Land
Mediterranean mountain and cultural world
Wild, snow-capped mountain peaks next to palm trees, Mediterranean culture paired with Nordic thoroughness
For over 700 years, the city nestles on the slopes of the mountain peaks of the Texel group, which protects the city from the cold winds of the north. The hills of the city were already inhabited by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, Merano was the residence of the Counts of Tyrol. At the end of the 19th century, Empress Sissis made the city a health resort and thus an international reference point that reached to Moscow.
The eventful history has left many traces: the walls of the medieval city gates, wonderful parks with unique trees and many castles and palaces. First and foremost Castle Tyrol, the princely castle and, of course, Trauttmansdorff Castle, the residence of the Empress with the much-praised botanical gardens.
Numerous great artists and personalities have visited Merano in the last 150 years and the aura of the city radiates their presence today
