Castle Tirol

Built between 1.040 and 1.060 AD, Schloss Tirol was the ancestral castle of the Counts of Tyrol, who ruled the entire province of Tyrol. This made it the most important castle in the region. The Counts also knew which place to choose, as the castle stands exactly at the place of the Burggrafenamt, where in winter the sun shines the longest.
The castle towers majestically above the Burggrafenamt and Merano. The complex is still perfectly intact and offers a wonderful medieval courtyard, very beautiful rooms with precious frescoes and a precious chapel. You can see the very attractive permanent exhibition of the turbulent history of South Tyrol in the 20th century.
